[settlement no. 1]

The planet of Mars presents several challenges for human habitation…primarily the cold temperatures, unbreathable atmosphere, and dangerous radiation. Our proposal seeks to amend these adversaries by combining technically advanced prefabricated capsules with an innovative construction process using Mars’ rocky volcanic basalt as a building material. The prefabricated steel and aluminum capsules are brought to the planet and then covered by various rock types and sizes found on site via robotic-arm technology. This ensures the capsules will have a stable foundation while also reducing radiation and providing a natural insulator. The architecture of Babel: Settlement No. 1 is expressed as a large-scale ant farm that reveals itself in section similar to the Pyramids of Giza - constructed nearly 4,600 years ago. Imagine…the first universal “wonder,” a new Babylon.
